Things slow down a little when it comes to scanning and copying, but as a printer the Lexmark is a very nippy contender. Photos were even quicker, with a top-quality 6 x 4in print arriving in just 31 seconds and our full A4 montage taking just over a minute. Our mono document printed at 9ppm, which beats the A-Listed Canon Pixma MP640, while the S605’s colour rate was an impressive 4.3ppm. Lexmark has also finally updated its print engine, and it’s fast.
Along with the comprehensive installation guide on the CD and a help button, it’s tough to think of a way Lexmark could have made things any more user-friendly out of the box. At the moment the range of widgets is a little disappointing, but it worked well in our tests and adds a nice element of individuality to the printer.Īlso on the home screen are quick buttons for two-sided printing and a customisable Eco mode, as well as an ink-level icon that leads to step-by-step cartridge and printhead replacement instructions.
It potentially opens the interface up to iPhone app-style innovation, although it obviously relies on the community getting involved. You can also build your own custom widgets for the screen or download those of other users: examples include RSS feeds, integration with Google calendar, and support for images on libraries such as Picasa (see the gallery).
